Thanksgiving in Venice

Celebrating an American Holiday in a foreign place is kind of an odd experience. It's more like a birthday--- you're in a celebratory mood but no one else has any idea. So what does one do? Well, if you're in Venice and it's a beautiful day, you sight-see. Such was the case for us, so the six of us left our Venice canal apartment and ventured out.

We saw a sign for a Thanksgiving Celebration!

Unfortunately, it cost 70 Euro per person! A little too rich for our blood-- besides were were planning a good home cooked meal for later that evening.

After walking around quite a bit, it was time to tour Venice by canal. The men-folk negotiated w/ the gondolier and got us a short ride on the gondola. It was pretty neat!

Next it was time for a spritz and a bite to eat!

Afterward we made our way to St. Mark's. The whole square and the vestibule area was quite flooded. Throughout the city you could pick out the Venetians by their stylish rubber boots. It was such a strange thing to see so much flooding, yet to know that it was fairly normal, as the well-prepared Venetians tromped through puddles.

After the sun went down we headed down to our local market and picked up some ingredients for a large, Thanksgiving dinner. We prepared garlic stuffed chicken breasts, pasta, and lots and lots of wine.

It was a delicious dinner and of course I ate way too much. We were all very thankful to be there together and for the opportunity to travel.
