Berlin Picnic #3

There are places to picnic besides Mauer Park, so we thought we should try one out (even though it was another beautiful Sunday afternoon and no doubt Mauer Park was hopping). Having spent the majority of our time in East Berlin, we thought we should check out a park in the West. The owners of the apartment we were staying in had recommended Schlosspark Charlottenburg—conveniently located in Charlottenburg, right next to the Charlottenburg Palace. We we jumped on the S-bahn and made our way west.

Charlottenburg Palace and its surrounding grounds was the former residence of King Friedrich I. Now it belongs to the people of the Berlin. And of course, the park is well used. There were lots of people out for a nice afternoon stroll enjoying the fall colors and weather.

While this park was very pretty, it perhaps was more suited to strolling rather than picnicking. We had a difficult time finding a place to picnic. Of course lounging on the nicely pruned garden area grass was verboden, but we were surprised that the more natural landscapes were also roped off from those who would picnic. That pretty much relegated us to sitting on a bench somewhere. But which bench? Most benches were located right on the path, where many people would pass us by. We wanted something a bit more secluded. Eventually we came upon a nice circle with numerous benches—looks good to us! Plus we were pretty hungry by this point.

We returned to our classic picnic food—bread, cheese, wine. And this time we through in an orange. The cheese was German, but unfortunately I can’t remember the name.

Our collapsible cups were on their last legs. In the above photo, you can see the base of the cups are filled with wine. We had to crank our necks out and sip our wine out over the ground so as not spill on ourselves. RIP Coleman collapsible cups.

After our picnic we checked out Savigny platz area, an upscale area, filled with nice bars and restaurants. We hopped on a train and headed back to our home in the East.
